Basic Information
Title
Required: Yes
The Title is the individual’s display name and appears throughout the website anywhere the profile is displayed.
Recommendations
- Enter the individual’s preferred display name.
- Do not include academic degrees, certifications, or professional credentials.
Correct
- Jane Smith
Incorrect
- Jane Smith, Ph.D.
- Jane Smith, CPA
Framework Note
Academic credentials and similar information may be included within the Additional Biography sections rather than the profile title.
Sort Field
Required: Yes
The Sort Field determines the order in which profiles appear within directory listings.
Recommendations
- Use the individual’s family (last) name whenever possible.
- Use consistent values throughout the directory.
Although the field accepts any value, alphabetical sorting by last name provides the most consistent user experience.
Why this matters
Directory listings rely on this field to organize profiles. Inconsistent values may cause unexpected ordering.
Include in Global Directory
Required: No
Determines whether the profile appears in the university’s Global Directory.
Recommendations
Leave this option enabled unless there is a specific reason to exclude the profile.
Common reasons for exclusion may include:
- Privacy concerns
- Temporary removal from public search results
- Other situations directed by the Web Team
Best Practice
Most profiles should remain included in the Global Directory.
Classification
Profile Type
Required: Yes
Profile Types determine which directory pages include the profile.
A profile may belong to multiple Profile Types.
Common values include:
- Faculty
- Staff
- Adjunct Faculty
- Emeritus Faculty
Recommendations
Select every Profile Type that accurately represents the individual’s appointments.
When multiple selections are appropriate, list the individual’s primary appointment first whenever possible.
Why this matters
Directory pages use Profile Type to determine which profiles are displayed.
AU / Division / Office(s)
Required: Yes
Associates the individual with one or more academic units, divisions, or offices.
Multiple organizational units may be selected.
Recommendations
- Include every applicable organizational unit.
- List the primary appointment first when possible.
- Do not create duplicate profiles for multiple appointments.
Framework Note
A single profile can appear across multiple UMKC websites when multiple organizational units are assigned.
Sub-Directory
Required: No
Repeatable: Yes
Sub-Directories group related profiles within an organizational unit.
Each value should represent a department, program, office, laboratory, or similar organizational grouping.
Use the + button to add additional Sub-Directories.
Recommendations
- Enter one Sub-Directory per row.
- Reuse existing values whenever possible.
- Maintain consistent spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Office Location

Enter the office location exactly as it should appear on the website.
This field is displayed as plain text and does not automatically link to campus maps.
Pronouns
Required: No
Displays the individual’s preferred pronouns adjacent to their name on the profile page.
Provide this information only when supplied by the individual.
Profile Content
Headshot
Required: No (Recommended)
Upload a professional headshot for the profile.
Recommended Specifications

Best Practice
Compress images before uploading to improve page performance.
Biography
Required: No (Recommended)
The Biography serves as the primary narrative for the individual’s profile.
Supported formatting includes:

Recommendations
- Keep the biography focused on professional accomplishments.
- Use headings sparingly.
- Paste content as plain text whenever possible to remove unnecessary formatting copied from Microsoft Word.

Additional Biography Sections allow editors to organize profile content into meaningful sections.
Each section contains:

Position Titles
