Recommendations

  • Enter the individual’s preferred display name.
  • Do not include academic degrees, certifications, or professional credentials.

Correct

  • Jane Smith

Incorrect

  • Jane Smith, Ph.D.
  • Jane Smith, CPA
Framework Note
Academic credentials and similar information may be included within the Additional Biography sections rather than the profile title.

Sort Field

Required: Yes

The Sort Field determines the order in which profiles appear within directory listings.

Recommendations

  • Use the individual’s family (last) name whenever possible.
  • Use consistent values throughout the directory.

Although the field accepts any value, alphabetical sorting by last name provides the most consistent user experience.

Why this matters
Directory listings rely on this field to organize profiles. Inconsistent values may cause unexpected ordering.

Include in Global Directory

Required: No

Determines whether the profile appears in the university’s Global Directory.

Recommendations

Leave this option enabled unless there is a specific reason to exclude the profile.

Common reasons for exclusion may include:

  • Privacy concerns
  • Temporary removal from public search results
  • Other situations directed by the Web Team
Best Practice
Most profiles should remain included in the Global Directory.

Classification

Profile Type

Required: Yes

Profile Types determine which directory pages include the profile.

A profile may belong to multiple Profile Types.

Common values include:

  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Adjunct Faculty
  • Emeritus Faculty

Recommendations

Select every Profile Type that accurately represents the individual’s appointments.

When multiple selections are appropriate, list the individual’s primary appointment first whenever possible.

Why this matters
Directory pages use Profile Type to determine which profiles are displayed.

AU / Division / Office(s)

Required: Yes

Associates the individual with one or more academic units, divisions, or offices.

Multiple organizational units may be selected.

Recommendations

  • Include every applicable organizational unit.
  • List the primary appointment first when possible.
  • Do not create duplicate profiles for multiple appointments.
Framework Note
A single profile can appear across multiple UMKC websites when multiple organizational units are assigned.

Sub-Directory

Required: No

Repeatable: Yes

Sub-Directories group related profiles within an organizational unit.

Each value should represent a department, program, office, laboratory, or similar organizational grouping.

Use the + button to add additional Sub-Directories.

Recommendations

  • Enter one Sub-Directory per row.
  • Reuse existing values whenever possible.
  • Maintain consistent spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Correct

  • Biology
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Student Success

Avoid

  • biology

Framework Note

When a matching directory page exists, the framework automatically creates an Appears in link on the profile.

Publishing Note
Changes to Sub-Directory assignments require publishing both the Profile and the affected Directory page(s).

The email address is displayed on both the profile page and directory listings.
