Resolving Redirects

What is a redirect?

A redirect occurs when a URL automatically forwards visitors from one address to another.

For example, a page may have been moved from:

https://www.umkc.edu/example

to

https://www.umkc.edu/about/example

The original URL still works because it redirects visitors to the new location.

Why does DubBot report redirects?

Redirects are not necessarily errors. However, they may indicate that a page is linking to an outdated URL.

Updating links to point directly to the current destination:

  • Improves website performance.
  • Reduces unnecessary requests.
  • Simplifies future website maintenance.
  • Helps prevent broken links if the redirect is removed.

Fixing a redirect in Cascade CMS

  1. Open the affected page using Open In > Editor from DubBot.
  2. Locate the link that is redirecting.
  3. Replace the outdated URL with the final destination.
  4. Submit and publish the page.

Whenever possible, use Cascade’s page or file chooser when linking to content managed within the CMS.

Fixing a redirect in WordPress

  1. Edit the affected page.
  2. Locate the redirecting link.
  3. Replace the old URL with the current destination.
  4. Update the page.
  5. Verify the new link opens directly to the intended page.

When is a redirect acceptable?

Some redirects are intentional and may remain in place for extended periods. For example:

  • Short URLs used in marketing materials.
  • Vanity URLs.
  • Legacy URLs maintained for visitors and search engines.

If the redirect is intentional and maintained by Web Services, no action may be required.

Verify the correction

After updating the link:

  1. Open the published page.
  2. Select the updated link.
  3. Confirm it opens directly to the intended destination.
  4. Wait for DubBot to crawl the website again to verify the warning has been resolved.
